Mackay Harbour History

MHE (Mackay Harbour Engineering) was first formed and commenced operation in 1991 by Eric Smith and Peter Moore. The premises were located down in the Industrial Precinct at the Mackay Harbour. After a few years, a bigger shed was required and the business relocated to the North Mackay Industrial area in McCulloch Street.

With the retirement of Eric and Peter in 2005, Gary Smith (Eric’s son) and Craig Thwaite took over the reins of the business. Both of them having worked at the company for a number of years, Gary 11 years and Craig 5 years, the transition from old owners to the new generation went without too much of a hitch.

What Mackay Harbour Engineering Does

“A lot of people think we build boats,” quips Craig. “The business got its name because it used to be down at the harbour in the industrial area.”

But Mackay Harbour is known as a top-notch machine shop centrally located in North Mackay with its own niche: Machining component parts in the small to medium range, refurbish, design and manufacture. Their staff of trained and highly skilled tradesmen work with traditional and CNC equipment, providing parts to spec with the quickest turnaround possible.

The machine shop enjoys long-term business relationships servicing earthmoving, mining, marine, sugarcane, agriculture, railway and other industries. Walk-in customers with one-off projects are always welcome.
